Summer Internship, Stockholm: After eight weeks at Nordea Markets FICC, our internship has come to its end. Our stay at Nordea Markets has been both challenging and rewarding, but needless to say there are still much more to learn at Nordea Markets!
Soon the venue will change for us interns, as we will go back to school to finish our last year. Not only will we miss the atmosphere on the trading floor, but also the inspiring meetings we have had with the people working there. A common denominator of all the weeks was definitely the encouraging and passionate people of Nordea Markets.
The internship consisted of seven weeks at the desks of FICC and an additional week consisting of a Nordic case competition. The weeks at the desks started with an introduction to the specific desk and continued with an introduction to the case we interns had each week. Each case was related to the operations of the desk we spent the week at and was presented on Fridays; the cases were interesting and exciting as they gave us an in-depth example of the daily operations at the specific desk. The case for the Nordic competition was solved in cross-Nordic teams and the challenge was to help a company with their interest rate risk, currency risk and liquidity management. It was great fun to collaborate with people of different nationalities and backgrounds!
The weeks were also filled with different meetings, both regarding technical and practical subjects of working at the desks, but also conversations of personal character. In addition to the general career advice we were given we also became much more familiar with the different positions that exist on the trading floor, such as sales and research. Although it was a challenge to understand the full operational scope of each desk during such a short period of time, the employees and our weekly mentors were of huge help as they answered our questions and inspired us to solve problems we were pondering about.
The internship was unquestionably full of learning opportunities. Absorbing the atmosphere on the trading floor was incredibly inspiring and we learned much more than we could have imagined during these weeks. We also developed our presentation skills thanks to the weekly case presentations and the diversity of the case assignments enriched our analytical skills. The closeness to the market and the profound competence available at Nordea Markets has kept us curious during the entire internship, and still does! Nordea Markets is certainly a place filled with ambitious people passionate about financial markets and we are convinced that future interns will feel the same!
